Overview
The Volcanoes climbing program will immerse you into the world of towering volcanoes and other prominent peaks in the Cascade Range. From less technical ascents of Mt. St. Helens and Mt. Adams to more challenging routes on Mt. Hood and Mt. Rainier, the program will take you to the summits of The Ring of Fire under your own powers in a relatively short span of time.
Our goal for Volcanoes is to develop a competent team with the focus on building trust in each other as well as sharing the passion for efficient, safe, and fun climbing. We hope that after completing the program, you will gain the confidence to plan and lead basic to intermediate glacier climbs.

Event enrollment (subject to change by program administrator):
Registered Volcanoes members will be prioritized for participation in climbing events. Trip leaders will create their respective events in the Gorizont Basic Alpine (Members Only) Facebook group 2-3 weeks in advance of the scheduled event. There will be an open enrollment period for each climbing event.
Team rosters are confirmed once the candidates have been approved by the trip leader. In case there is capacity in the event after the enrollment period has closed, unregistered club members of the Basic Alpine group may be invited to such an event.
Program events are subject to further confirmation and possible cancellation due to unfavorable weather/terrain conditions or road closures.
Roster Priority
In case there are more climbers interested in a particular climb than there are spots available, candidates will be evaluated according to the following criteria:
- Commitment to completing the entire program
- Demonstrated physical conditioning
- Demonstrated proficiency in skills required for the climb
- Prior experience with the trip leader(s)
- First-time summiteers
- Club volunteers
Climbers who couldn’t secure the spot, but are still interested and eligible, may be waitlisted.
Pre-trip Communication
We will communicate primarily through Facebook: groups, events, messenger, as well as email.
Conditioning Hikes/Skills Sessions
We will post a schedule of proposed conditioning hikes and skills sessions that will take place starting late February through May. Program participants will be asked to track their training progress on a shared spreadsheet. We urge you to start your individual training program as soon as possible.
If not current, certain skills, such as crevasse rescue, will need to be refreshed prior to glacier travel. We plan on having a crevasse rescue refresher (both indoor and outdoor) sometime in spring.
Individual Equipment
- Standard glacier travel kit
- Alpine camping equipment (including shelter)
- Climbing helmets are required for all climbs but St. Helens
Ice screws, pickets, and climbing ropes will be provided.
See you on the slopes!
